Conservation Areas
A Conservation Area, in historic building terms, is an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character and appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. We have a duty to consider which parts of their area warrant such conservation and designate those areas.
Conservation Areas are of many kinds and may vary from historic town centres and villages to country houses and their parks, Georgian and Victorian planned suburbs, or sites of interest for their industrial archaeology.
There are 47 Conservation Areas within the District, click here for a full list and dates designated. If you would like a copy of a map of any Conservation Area please contact us(details below).
Designation of a Conservation Area draws public attention to its architectural and historic interest and emphasises the need for any changes or new development, either within or adjoining the area, to be sympathetic to and respect its character. We have additional powers of control in conservation areas. Consent for the demolition of most structures and buildings and written notice must be given to us of intent to lop, top or fell trees.

Conservation Area Consent
This may be required if you intend to demolish a structure within a Conservation Area. Advice should always be sought before submitting an application. We will also be able to inform you if a building is a Listed Building or within a Conservation Area. A separate application form and Certificate of Ownership is required for submitting Conservation Area Consent applications, click here for further information on submitting your application.
